Godwin did not view Shelley’s assistance as a favour, or as a symptom of the younger man’s generosity, but as the proper fulfilment of his duty. Shelley initially accepted this argument, and, for the first few years of their acquaintance, continued to fund Godwin even as he disputed his treatment of his daughters. |
