Judy Yung is a second-generation Chinese American born and
raised in San Francisco Chinatown. She has served as a librarian,
as a journalist, and as director of the Chinese Women of America Research Project in San Francisco. She is currently Assistant
Professor of American Studies at the University of California,
Santa Cruz. Her earlier books include Chinese Women ofAmer-
