Almost three years later, on 29 December 1916, B. W. Huebsch brought
Portrait
out in book form in the United States (set from the
Egoist
proofsheets). Harriet Weaver imported the American sheets and published the book in England on 12 February 1917 under the
Egoist
imprint (dated 1916). The second (though first true English) edition, printed in Southport and published by the
Egoist
, appeared in March 1918 (though dated 1917; corrections were made for this edition from Joyce’s lists of errata compiled by Harriet Weaver). Another printing, using imported American sheets and issued under the
Egoist
imprint, appeared in 1921. The text was entirely reset with corrections and published by Jonathan Cape in 1924 (Joyce himself having carefully read proofs for this, the third edition). After this, Joyce’s attention was taken up with other matters.

In 1964, the ‘definitive’ text was published in the United States by Viking (and in England in 1968 by Jonathan Cape). This text was established by Chester G. Anderson comparing the holograph manuscript with all editions published in the USA and England during Joyce’s lifetime and with lists of corrections and changes noted by Joyce, and then submitting his suggested corrections to Richard Ellmann, who accepted some and rejected others.
8
As Anderson himself has said, ‘there were errors’, some of which he tried in 1971 to correct, but these were ‘vetoed’ by Ellmann.
9
He did manage to get them into print in 1993.
10
That same year, Hans Walter Gabler produced the first truly critical edition, fully corrected using the fair-copy manuscript (held by the National Library of Ireland)
11
as copy-text and collating this against the proofs and published text of the
Egoist
serialization, the New York first edition (1916), the second edition (English first edition, 1918), the third edition (Jonathan
Cape, 1924), and the Viking edition of 1964. He includes a full list of emendations of accidentals and a historical collation of variants.
12
I recommend it to everyone interested in the full history of Joyce’s attempts to get a correct edition of
Portrait
into print.

The aim of this edition is more modest. The text is the 1968 Jonathan Cape printing of the 1964 ‘definitive text’ published by Viking and edited by Chester Anderson. Corrections marked by Joyce and collated by Harriet Weaver, some of which were made only to the English 1918 and 1924 editions, have been entered. Errors that crept into the 1968 Cape printing have been silently corrected. One late change, sent by Joyce to Harriet Weaver separately in 1917, has been entered. The chapter titles have been changed back from the Cape arabic numerals to the roman numerals of every other printing. All these are listed in the list of selected variants in the Appendix, which also notes selected departures in substantives of this text from the manuscript, the
Egoist
, 1916, 1918, 1924, 1964, and 1968 printings. Most of these mark differences between this text and the original manuscript. Finally, the three asterisks at section breaks (rather than Cape’s one) have been restored, and the practice of starting each chapter on a new page has been reinstated.
