“I think I’ve said everything that
needed to be said. But I want an answer now, Chase. I’m not
prepared to wait any longer while you carry on scheming behind my
back.” She held her breath as she watched the emotions flit across
his face. She had no idea which option he would choose, but there
was no going back now. She couldn’t unsay what she’d said—even if
she could she didn’t think she would have.

“I have your bank details on record. I
will transfer the funds directly into your account within the
hour.” He seemed to have pulled himself together a little and got
over the shock of her demands. Or maybe it was the shock of her
finding out about him stringing her along, she thought
bitterly.

“You will obviously not be able to
remain employed here, Alicia, so I’ll have your termination papers
drawn up and sent to you along with a reference for any future
employment. I will make sure no mention of your personal time here
is made. It will simply be a reference indicating that you were a
good worker during your employ here. Nothing more, nothing
less.”

Alicia was surprised at that, never
having thought that he would actually recommend her as an employee.
She looked a little closer at his face, and saw that the hurt
expression was still behind his eyes, even though he seemed to be
trying to hide it. For a fleeting moment she wondered if she had
got the situation horrible wrong. Maybe he did feel some kind of
genuine emotion towards her and she had just completely messed up
any possibility of a future they might have shared
together.

His next words allayed her doubts,
however, and she didn’t know whether to breathe a sigh of relief or
one of sadness. “I will expect you to be off the property within
the hour. I will instruct my driver that he is to take you wherever
you need to go, but once you leave here you are never to come back.
I will have the non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements drawn
up as soon as possible, so if you could let Julie know the address
of where you’ll be staying I will have them couriered over for you
to sign.”

“Thank you. Goodbye, Chase.” She
turned to walk away from him, fighting the tears that were
threatening to fall and determined that she wasn’t going to let him
see. He had agreed to her demands, which was a good thing wasn’t
it—so why did she feel so betrayed and devastated?

“Alicia.” Chase called her name and
she stopped walking but didn’t turn around. “Make sure that you
never come back here. I won’t be responsible for my actions if you
do.”

She took a deep shuddering breath,
straightened her back and squared her shoulders. “I won’t.” With
her chin raised high she walked away from him feeling as though her
heart was going to break. Her future, and that of her unborn child,
was uncertain, but she finally had a burgeoning hope that her
mother’s medical situation could now be resolved.

Whatever the future may bring, she
would cope just as she always had: alone and
independent…
